Despréaux

The ‘maître à danser’ Jean-Étienne Despréaux (1748-1820) developed a dance notation based on letters that he animated. During a visit to the library of the Opéra Garnier and based on the research of Pauline Chevalier (INHA Paris), Sandrine Nugue discovered the relatively unknown archives of Despréaux, which combine dance movements with letterforms. She developed her research during a residency at Fotokino in 2023, followed by a performance at the Musée d'art contemporain de Marseille with the dancer Julien Monty. The ‘circle of positions' is an essential element of the system, which employs vowels to indicate the position of the feet.
